Burglars Avoid Homes with Intruder Alarms

By Article Expert on Nov. 16, 2009.

How effective are burglar alarms?

Bristol suffers over 7000 burglaries each year. Protect your home by reviewing your current security measures.

  • Home Office reports show that 84% of thieves are deterred by alarms and 82% would be put off by CCTV equipment
  • The installation of alarms on some estates in Safe and Secure Homes Schemes have reduced intrusions by over 70% leading to an increase in reported feelings of safety by residents.

Plan how to protect your property

Where are the weak points in your home security?  Are there accessible windows, windows with no locks or an unlocked shed full of useful tools?   Are there prickly plants around the boundaries or up the side of you house?  How visible is the exterior burglar alarm box?   Is the alarm also visible at the back of the house?

Alarms prevent intruders

Police authorities in Bristol work with reformed criminals who report that it is much less risky to target a house without an alarm than one with.  Finding unalarmed houses is apparently easy.

So get an alarm as a warning device quickly and prevent break-ins to your home!

Pros and cons of the different types of burglar alarm

Alarms can be audible only, monitored or DIY.

  • False alarms triggerred by badly installed DIY alarms are not looked on kindly by police or fire authorities and are therefore not recommended.
  • Many alarm companies offer audible only alarms which are perfectly adequate for most homes.   Police and fire authorities will respond to these alarms if there is a reliable report of a burglary taking place.
  • Alarm monitoring is carried out by an ARC where false alarms are identified and only true emergencies are sent to the police or fire services who respond immediately.

Effective Burglar Alarms

Getting the correct burglar alarm depends on finding one that suits each house and the people within it.  Some specialist Bristol alarm installation companies offer a free security survey and will help you identify the right alarm system for your home.  This individualised survey will pinpoint exactly what you and your home need to provide an effective deterrent to robbers and protection.   Using an NSI approved company guarantees police, fire service and insurance approval for their work and will help ensure that you feel safe in your home.

Users! How to fix any slow computer in less than 15 minutes?

By Article Expert on Nov. 4, 2009.

This article covers simple steps that any user can follow to rapidly make any computer faster. Implementing either of the first two steps in this article should take less than 15 minutes using a PC or Mac.

Step 1 -  Clean the computer registry

Slow computers often have errors in their registry. The registry is comparable to a nervous system. Its main function is to connect software hardware and computer files. Over time, errors occur and this slows down computers, frequently their registry become corrupted. A simple step is to locate then repair the errors in the registry. Despite the fact that it is possible to repair the registry manually in theory, this method is not recommended. The main reason for this, is that it requires strong knowledge of the structure of the registry as well as its functions. Using a registry cleaner software is a faster, more reliable option to eliminate errors, redundant files, incorrect links and deal with ActiveX components. Click on compare registry fix software for more information.

Step 2 - Delete and block adware and spyware

Another common reason leading to computers slowing-down, is the large number of spyware and adware, which are downloaded from the Internet, often without the users knowledge. This usually happens when peer to peer networks are involved, for example when downloading videos and music. One of the simplest solutions to improve any computer’s speed is to use an anti spyware or adware software to scan, remove and block these unwanted threats. It helps to test the relevant anti spyware or adware program by downloading a trial version as most of them are free. The main features to consider are Ease of Download and Simplicity of Use, Automatic Backup, Quality of Customer Service, and the overall effectiveness of the software. The best software tend to be the simplest to use and rely on a research capability that constantly updates the software for new threats. Click on best adware spyware removal for more information.

Step 3 - Eliminate viruses

Unsurprisingly many computer viruses can slow down computers and drive down response times. Often viruses damage computer files and use excessive resources such as large amount RAM and disk space. Running the latest version of the best anti-virus programs will fix many of the problems which are detrimental to computer performance.

Step 4 - Simple housekeeping tasks

There are many simple housekeeping tasks which can be done to improve the speed of any computer, for example uninstalling any software that is not needed.  Stopping programs launching automatically is also useful to speed up any computer and is usually very straightforward. These simple tasks generally produce marginal improvements.

Step 5 - Optimise the Hard disk

For hard disks which are smaller than 2GB then at least 200MB of disk should be kept free and at least 500MB for larger hard disks. The amount of free space on the hard drive is a key factor of performance as it is used by temporary files needed by software to run. This also enables the operating system to swap files using the hard disk as it runs out of RAM. In that event, users can experience a reduction in speed, if too little space is available on the hard disk. To check the hard disk itself it is recommended to use a disk scanning programs such as Scandisk for Windows. For instance the hard disk may be too fragmented and some of its sectors may be damaged, and this can create problems even if the hard drive is large enough. Running a defragmentation program is another step that can be completed to improve  the speed of any computer.

Step 6 - Optimising the RAM

Some programs are poorly designed and do not release RAM resources after they are closed. Other programs have less memory to run as a result. Computers frequently run out of RAM after a while. In order to overcome this, ugrading the RAM is probably necessary. Another free option is to avoid using some computer programs simultaneously.

Step 7 - Stop the computer from overheating

Faulty fans are a common cause leading to the computer overheating, slowing down then freezing as a result. To overcome this problem, replacing the fan is the most pragmatic solution. The effect should be immediate as this will increase the flow of air through the computer, thereby reducing the computer’s temperature and increasing its speed as a result.
